Test blueprint: weight of each domain

  1. 1Growth and Development8%
    • Definition: Refers to the biological processes that drive changes in craniofacial structures, dental arches, and overall facial form from infancy through adolescence, influencing orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning.
  2. 2Comprehensive Orthodontic Treatment12%
    • Definition: Involves the full range of orthodontic care provided during mixed and permanent dentition stages, including diagnosis, appliance therapy, and management of developing malocclusions tailored to growth potential.
  3. 3Statistics/Research Design2%
    • Definition: Encompasses the principles and methodologies for designing scientific studies, analyzing data, and interpreting results in orthodontic research and evidence-based practice.
  4. 4Etiology of Malocclusion7%
    • Definition: The study of the causes and contributing factors of malocclusion, including genetic, environmental, and functional influences on dental and skeletal discrepancies.
  5. 5Orthognathic Surgery10%
    • Definition: Refers to a set of maxillofacial surgical procedures aimed at the correction of dentofacial deformities resulting from skeletal discrepancies of the maxilla, mandible, or both. These procedures are indicated when the severity of the skeletal malocclusion precludes effective correction through orthodontic means alone. The primary objectives include the restoration of optimal occlusal function, improvement of facial harmony and aesthetics, and, where applicable, enhancement of airway patency. Orthognathic surgery is typically undertaken following presurgical orthodontic decompensation and requires meticulous interdisciplinary planning between orthodontists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons to ensure functional and stable long-term outcomes.
  6. 6Retention and Stability5%
    • Definition: Involves maintaining treatment results post-orthodontic therapy and understanding the factors that influence long-term stability of tooth and jaw positions.
  7. 7Patient Safety, Professionalism, and Ethics5%
    • Definition: Covers the principles of delivering care that minimizes risk and harm, adheres to ethical standards, and reflects professionalism in interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.
  8. 8Multidisciplinary Approach10%
    • Definition: A multidisciplinary approach in dentistry involves collaboration among various dental specialists to diagnose and treat complex oral health conditions, providing comprehensive and personalized care. This approach recognizes that a patient's dental needs may extend beyond the scope of a single specialty and requires the expertise of multiple practitioners.
  9. 9Orthodontic Assessment and Records7%
    • Definition: A detailed evaluation of a patient's dental and facial structures to understand their orthodontic needs and plan appropriate care. It involves gathering clinical records such as photographs, x-rays, dental impressions or digital scans, and medical history to guide diagnosis and treatment decisions.
  10. 10Interceptive Orthodontics14%
    • Definition: Also known as early orthodontic treatment, is a proactive approach to addressing dental alignment and jaw issues in children, typically between the ages of 7 and 11, during their mixed dentition phase. This phase involves both primary (baby) and permanent teeth. Interceptive orthodontics aims to guide jaw growth and correct problems like malocclusions (misalignments) as they develop, potentially preventing the need for more extensive and complex treatments later in life.
  11. 11Biomechanics, Materials, and Biology of Tooth Movement20%
    • Orthodontic biomechanics: is the study and application of the mechanical principles that govern tooth movement and jaw modification during orthodontic treatment.
    • Orthodontic materials: are the specialized substances and devices used in orthodontic diagnosis, appliance fabrication, and treatment to move teeth, guide jaw development, and maintain results.
    • Biology of tooth movement is the study of the cellular, molecular, and tissue-level responses of the periodontium to orthodontic forces applied to teeth.

Total 100%. Blueprint distributions of the examination may differ up to (+/-) 5% in each category. Subtopics hold the booklet's 'Definition of Terms' for each domain.

Examination format

Description

About the Omani Examination for Orthodontists (OEORDNT)

The Omani Examination for Orthodontists (OEORDNT) is designed to comprehensively evaluate candidates' critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and decision-making skills in orthodontics. It assesses their ability to accurately diagnose malocclusions and craniofacial anomalies, interprets clinical and radiographic findings, and formulates comprehensive, evidence-based treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs. Emphasis is placed on delivering safe, effective, and patient-centered care across a wide spectrum of clinical scenarios. In addition, the examination aims to ensure that candidates demonstrate a sound understanding of contemporary orthodontic principles, ethical practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The OEORDNT serves as a standardized measure of clinical competence for orthodontists seeking employment within local healthcare institutions, thereby supporting the delivery of high-quality orthodontic services across the Sultanate.
